Images from closest approach are expected to be released on Wednesday, July 15. Today, were excited to announce that there are currently 100,000,000 active users on Instagram. This stunning image of the dwarf planet was captured from New Horizons at about 4 p.m. EDT Tuesday – about 7,750 miles above the surface - roughly the same distance from New York to Mumbai, India – making it the first-ever space mission to explore a world so far from Earth. This is the last and most detailed image of Pluto sent to Earth before the moment of closest approach, which was at 7:49 a.m. Gorgeous Pluto! The dwarf planet has sent a love note back to Earth via our New Horizons spacecraft, which has traveled more than 9 years and 3+ billion miles. With more than 1 billion active users, it was only a matter of time before Instagram users could start buying items straight via the app. Instagram Shoppable photos are one of Instagram’s latest features to help make the platform more business-friendly. We’ve seen inspiring moments like the first surface image of Pluto and Champions League celebrations, as well as striking locales like the white pools of Turkey and a Namibian desert ghost town. Among college-age mobile phone users, eMarketer said that as of April 2016, 39% used Instagram. Snapchat is in second place, but Instagram is a close third with 59% of those between the ages of 18 and 24 active on the social platform and 54% of those aged 25 to 34 using the photo sharing platform on a regular basis. Facebook still leads in that metric with between 85% and 89% of millennials active on the social network, depending on their age. Millennials are active on Instagram, according to eMarketer, the marketing research firm. Now it has yet another feather to put in its cap: More than half of U.S.
